During three weeks of fierce fighting near Avdeevka, this battle became perhaps the most expensive for Russia since the beginning of a full-scale war. Ukrainian artillery is destroying columns of armored vehicles and infantry of the invaders on the outskirts of the city, but so far they have not been able to achieve a breakthrough, writes the New York Times.
Russian losses near Avdeevka were even greater than those that the Russian army suffered in the battles near Ugledar in March of this year.
This city became a target for the invaders back in 2014, but it was this offensive that the Ukrainian military defending Avdiivka called the most brutal assault of all time.

“The most we had was half a day of silence,” notes a soldier of the 109th brigade.
Now the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to block Russia’s use of the main highway and railway along the front line. Therefore, Avdeevka has strategic value for the invaders, since its capture would push Ukrainian troops away from Donetsk and open the main railway and road routes to Russian troops in the area.
“But it also has political implications. Capturing the city after so many years of resistance would be a significant victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin before the onset of winter, the newspaper writes.
Russian troops are now regrouping near Avdeevka, and a new wave of assaults is expected in the coming days.
