Russian drones have repeatedly fallen on Romanian territory, but the Romanian authorities denied this for a long time. However, in early September, they admitted that they had discovered the wreckage of a drone in the Plaura area.

Subsequently, Romania began moving air defense systems closer to villages located across the river from Ukraine, as well as increasing the number of military observation posts and patrols in the area. Former SBU employee Ivan Stupak explainedChannel 24that such actions on the part of Romania indicate the intensification of the North Atlantic Alliance.

According to a former SBU employee, not only Romania, but also the Alliance remained silent for a long time about the fall of Russian drones on NATO territory. This was a common position, which occurred for one reason: it is much easier not to see, otherwise you need to react somehow.

It is very good that at least such a position is strengthening air defense. It is not a fact that it will turn towards Ukraine. I think they will proceed with caution. Such steps show that there are people there who are ready to make decisions. – Stupak noted.

Of course, taking such a step is a big political decision, perhaps not consistent with NATO policy.

How the air defense of Romania and Poland could protect the territory of Ukraine

As Stupak noted, the most decisive step the Alliance can take is to deploy air defense systems in Poland and Romania along the border with Ukraine, which would primarily protect the territories of these countries. However, the air defense would also extend to part of Ukraine.

Stupak explained how Poland and Romania can protect the territory of Ukraine: watch video

Tentatively, if an air defense system is placed on Polish territory near the border, plus or minus its radius of action can reach the eastern outskirts of Lvov. In this case, Poland could defend part of Ukraine, but in general protect its territory.

I don’t think that this will be some kind of escalation – supposedly weapons from NATO countries shoots down Russian missiles, but on Ukrainian territory,” the ex-SBU officer emphasized.

Then a part of the Ukrainian territory would be protected, on which it would be possible to locate:

  • production facilities;
  • repair bases;
  • fuel warehouses.

Arrivals of Russian drones in Romania

  • On September 4, during Russia’s attack on the Izmail port, enemy “Shaheds” crashed in Romania. At first, everyone in Bucharest objected, however, later they noted that they had found fragments of drones.
  • On September 9, the Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that the military had found another fragment of a drone.
  • On September 13, the country again discovered the wreckage of drones of the aggressor country. The Romanian Foreign Ministry summoned the head of the Russian diplomatic mission. They called Russia's actions an irresponsible escalation and called for an end to regular attacks against the Ukrainian population and civilian infrastructure.
