The 12th package of EU sanctions could limit Russia's trade by €5 billion – media

The new European Union sanctions package against Russia may include restrictions on trade in goods whose total value reaches about €5 billion. This will be the 12th package of sanctions imposed by the EU and directed against Moscow for its full-scale war against Ukraine.

Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that the new package would include restrictions on exports of welding machines, chemicals and other technologies used for military purposes.

It is also considering banning software licenses and limiting imports of small quantities of processed metals and aluminum products, building materials, transportation-related goods and diamonds.

Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozwiak wrote on the social network X that a proposal for the next round of EU sanctions against Russia will arrive next week.

“A significant part of the package consists of restrictions against circumvention of sanctions, dual-use goods and a ban on Russian diamonds,” he wrote.

Bloomberg writes that the ban on diamond imports will depend on a G7 agreement on tracking and controlling the movement of gems across borders, which is expected to be concluded soon.

The European Union will pay special attention to the fight against Russia's evasion of sanctions. The EU could, among other things, ban the transit of more goods through Russian territory and blacklist companies in third countries that facilitate the scheme.

The European Commission, according to the agency, is also discussing mechanisms for improving sanctions against Russian oil, since price restrictions have stopped working. The package is also expected to add more than 100 individuals and 40 entities to the sanctions lists.

Proposals for the contents of the 12th package of sanctions may still change before they are formally presented to member countries. The restrictions require the support of all 27 EU member states to approve them.
