– They made it clear that the integrity of the energy infrastructure supplying EU member states is a security issue for the entire European Union. The European Commission is also seeking guarantees from Ukraine to maintain oil supplies to the EU, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said.
Although these commitments have not been officially made public, media reports indicate that Hungary has demanded that the EU put pressure on Ukraine to ensure the transit of Russian oil and gas.
In turn, the European Union has declared its support for the energy infrastructure as an element of common security.
EU Chief Diplomat Kaja Kallas stressed that the agreements were reached within the framework of “energy solidarity” with landlocked countries.
She added that the guarantees received satisfied the Hungarian side.
The decision to extend economic sanctions against Russia was made at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on January 27.
