Sweden will decide whether to join NATO in the coming days. The decision on the course to the Alliance should be announced by the ruling party of Sweden.

The decision on the course to NATO has not yet been made

Sweden's ruling Social Democratic Party will decide on May 15 whether to cancel opposition to NATO membership. For decades, Stockholm maintained a policy of military neutrality.

The Social Democrats said that the decision on the NATO course has not yet been made.

What will be the decision not yet decided today. Our message is that on May 15 there will be a decision on which the leadership of the party will take a stand,” said Social Democratic Secretary Tobias Baudin.

If the Social Democrats support joining NATO, then there will be an obvious parliamentary majority for the bid. The Social Democrats are reportedly Sweden's biggest party in the last 100 years.

They are holding three party meetings this week to express their views on NATO membership before the leadership's final decision.

Sweden may join NATO

Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine forced Sweden and Finland to rethink their policy of military neutrality. Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the citizens of Sweden and Finland spoke in favor of joining the Alliance.

It was reported that Sweden is ready to apply to join the Alliance in the summer of 2022. Finland also plans to accept an application for NATO membership. Both countries want to submit a common application.

Quite predictably, Russia opposed the course of these countries in NATO, which officially threatened the Finns and Swedes. At the same time, information appeared in the media that the United States and Great Britain were ready to provide security guarantees to Sweden upon joining NATO.

The Alliance also said that they were ready to take temporary measures until Sweden and Finland become official members of NATO .

In addition to Russia, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic spoke out against the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO. He threatens to block these countries from joining the Alliance.

Sweden and Finland may officially apply to join NATO at the Alliance's June summit in Madrid.
