Support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine is important: what foreign media write about the Peace Summit

by alex

A two-day peace summit in Switzerland on ways to end the war in Ukraine ended with key states signing a joint communiqué agreed upon by more than 80 other countries and international organizations.

Which countries refused to sign the communique

However, India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, which have important trade relations with Russia as members of the BRICS economic group, attended the meeting but did not agree to sign a joint statement, CNN noted.

The document confirmed the signatories' commitment to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, the principles of sovereignty and independence of all states, including Ukraine, within internationally recognized borders.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, during a press conference along with the leaders of the European Union, Ghana, Canada, Chile and Switzerland, told reporters that supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine is important, because without it there will be no lasting peace.

Ukrainian peace plan

More than 100 countries and organizations gathered on the shores of a lake near Lucerne to support the 10-point peace plan that President Volodymyr Zelensky first outlined in late 2022.

This formula contains demands for a cessation of hostilities, the restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of pre-war borders with the Russian Federation — conditions that Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin is unlikely to ever agree to, The Bloomberg noted.

Dignitaries present included the leaders of Argentina, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and Great Britain.

US Vice President Kamala Harris attended the Peace Summit and took the opportunity to announce a $1.5 billion aid package that will go towards humanitarian expenses and help Ukraine rebuild its destroyed infrastructure.

— Such a high level of attendance indicates one thing. The world is deeply concerned about the war in Ukraine, provoked by Russian aggression, — said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The communique states that the signatories have concluded several more agreements. Among them was the principle that Ukraine should have permission for its own nuclear power plants, including the occupied Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, and that the Kremlin refrain from either using or threatening to use nuclear weapons.

The parties also stated that all children and civilians who were illegally displaced should be returned to Ukraine.
