Supersonic speed throughout the entire flight phase: Onyx anti-ship missile and its characteristics

The Russian military often uses Onyx supersonic anti-ship missiles. What is known about the Onyx rocket and what is its peculiarity – read in the ICTV Facts material.

Onyx: what kind of rocket is this?

The P-800 Oniks , a supersonic, universal, medium-range anti-ship missile, was developed in the late 1970s.

From the very beginning, the complex was conceived as universal, with the possibility of placement on submarines, surface ships and boats, aircraft and coastal launchers.

The Onyx missile is designed to combat :

  • with surface naval groups and single ships in conditions of strong fire and electronic countermeasures;
  • against ground targets , while the target engagement range can be increased several times.

Onyx flies at supersonic speeds during all phases of flight. In this case, the complex allows you to set a trajectory depending on the goal :

  • low;
  • high-low for over-the-horizon firing range.

The complex operates on a “fire and forget” principle and is inconspicuous to radar (made using STEALTH technologies). The export version of the Onyx rocket is called Yakhont.

The coastal anti-ship missile system (BRS) Bastion is one of the carriers of the Onyx missile along with the Caliber and X-35 Uran missile systems.

  • weight with TPS – 3,900 kg;
  • maximum speed – 750 m/s;
  • fuel – T-6 kerosene;
  • range along the altitude trajectory – 450-500 km;
