According to the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office, on September 19, 2024, at about 15:40, Russian occupiers carried out an airstrike on the territory of the geriatric boarding house in the city of Sumy.
At the time of the strike in Sumy, there were 221 patients in the facility, of which more than 80 were bedridden, as well as 60 service personnel.

There were 24 residents on the fifth floor of the boarding house. The main blow fell on the upper floors of the building.
— The strike hit the geriatric center, where there were 211 elderly people, 77 of whom needed outside assistance. Evacuation actions are currently underway, — the head of Sumy OVA Vladimir Artyukh reported on air of Ediny Novosti.
Another strike in Sumy hit a garage cooperative, as a result of which 15 garages and 10 cars were damaged.
As of 19:00, as a result of the strike in Sumy one person died and another 13 people were injured of varying severity.

As reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the technical and 5th floors were partially destroyed. 147 people were evacuated from the building. There are no people under the rubble.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched after the attack on Sumy on the fact of violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
