Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv suspended flights as part of a nationwide strike on September 2.

The strike was triggered by the killing of six hostages in the Gaza Strip, whose bodies were found by Israeli soldiers in a tunnel under the city of Rafah. The hostages were kidnapped on October 7, 2023, during a Hamas attack on Israel.

Protests continue in Israel after hostages were killed

The country's largest trade union has announced a strike that threatens to shut down “the entire Israeli economy.” Its goal is to force the government to conclude an agreement on the release of hostages held by Hamas militants and a ceasefire.

This reflects the large-scale public demonstrations in connection with the killing of six hostages in the Gaza Strip, whose bodies were found last weekend, the article says.

According to Israeli officials, three of the dead, including Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, were expected to be released after the ceasefire. The other five victims were Eden Yerushalmi, Carmel Gat, Almog Sarusi, Alexander Lobanov and Ori Danino.

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv and other cities across the country demanding a hostage deal. Organizers estimate that 300,000 people gathered in Tel Aviv and another 200,000 took part in protests across the country.
