Several days ago protests in Sri Lanka shook the world. It is known that the country's president fled to the Maldives before announcing his own resignation.
Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country with his wife. Note that a few days ago there was information that he arrived at the airport in order to avoid possible reprisals against himself.
Rajapaksa retired
Senior security official reported that Rajapaksa and his wife had flown to Mali in the Maldives. For these spouses, they used a Sri Lankan Air Force An-32 military transport aircraft.
Note that the local air traffic control at first refused the plane's request to land. But this became possible after the intervention of the speaker of the country's parliament and former president Mohammed Nasheed. Interestingly, the latter neither confirmed nor denied the relevant information.
Rajipaksa's departure from the country was confirmed on Wednesday, July 13th. This information was provided by the Sri Lankan Air Force.
At the request of the government and in accordance with the authority vested in the President in the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Air Force provided a plane this morning to fly the President, his wife and two security personnel to the Maldives, the agency said.
Note that the president and his wife could not leave Sri Lanka for several days. On Monday they were supposed to board a Sri Lankan Airlines plane to Dubai, but the aircraft left without them. And all because the immigration officers refused to process the passports of the official and those who were supposed to fly with him.
A state of emergency was declared in the country
After information about the escape of Rajipaksa to the Maldives protests resumed. Dissatisfied took to the streets of the capital Colombo. This was the reason that the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency throughout the country.
Hundreds of protesters gathered near the office of the Prime Minister. They demand that neither the president nor the prime minister “have mercy”. Note that military helicopters are flying over the demonstrators. Police also use tear gas against disgruntled policemen.

Recall that on July 9, the protesters broke into the presidential residence in Sri Lanka and seized it. The latter had to run away from the angry mob, which could literally tear it to pieces.
The reason for the dissatisfaction of the demonstrators is simple. They came from all over the country to Colombo in order to so that the president resigned. They were annoyed by several months of protests, which the inhabitants of the country went out because the authorities were ineffectively recovering from the economic crisis.
