Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson said he supports granting the Ukrainian army permission to fire Western weapons at targets in Russia.
He said this in a comment to the Voice of America.
When asked whether at the meeting with delegations of NATO countries they discussed lifting restrictions from Ukraine on strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, the speaker replied:
They are watching now
I said that the will of Congress is to allow them (the Armed Forces of Ukraine, – Ed.) flexibility in the use of weapons and assistance that we have already sent so that they can wage the war as they see fit. And I'm a supporter of this. I believe that was the intent of Congress,” Mike Johnson responded.
Permission to use weapons in the Russian Federation
Previously Congressmen called on the Pentagon to allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to attack the Russian Federation with American weapons.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also support such a resolution. Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson said that Washington should allow Ukraine to use American weapons to strike targets in the Russian Federation.
But German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke out against Ukraine’s attacks on Russian territory. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also opposes Ukraine's use of US weapons on Russian territory.
New British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Ukraine could use Storm Shadow missiles to attack military targets on Russian territory.
