South Korean President's Impeachment Trial Lasted Just Four Minutes

On January 14, the first session of the Constitutional Court in the impeachment case of President Yun Seok-yul did not take place in South Korea. The hearing lasted just four minutes, during which the judges rejected several motions from the defense.

The hearing was supposed to take place a month after the South Korean parliament voted to impeach Yoon for his attempt to impose martial law in the country on December 3.

At the hearing, the judges rejected the defense's request to exclude one of the lawyers from the trial, as well as objections to setting multiple dates for the hearings at once.

The next hearing is scheduled for January 16, and the court will continue its consideration cases regardless of the president's presence. It is not yet known whether Yun will be present. According to him, such a decision will be made after analyzing the progress of the trial, conditions, and requests for witnesses.

While the prosecution team criticized the president for not appearing at the hearing, considering this evidence of his unconstitutional position.

It is noted that the Constitutional Court has 180 days to decide on Yun's impeachment. If the impeachment is upheld, the president will be removed from office and snap elections will be held. If this does not happen, Yun will return to his post.

Earlier, the resident's lawyers said that he would not be able to attend the trial due to concerns for his safety, since law enforcement officials are trying to detain him on suspicion of attempting a coup d'etat due to the adoption of this decree.
