Recently, Wagner suffered significant losses in Mali. The Kremlin is already considering the possibility of replacing the Wagner Group in Africa with the African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Note that part of this corps has already been transferred to the Kharkov region to support the offensive of Russian troops in Ukraine. However, replacing the Wagner Group is not yet a priority for Russia.

Who Russia Might Send to Mali

ISW reported that several Russian military bloggers claim that the Russian Defense Ministry is using the losses of the Wagner Group as a pretext to stop their deployment in the Sahel and replace them with units of the African Corps.

At the same time, some Russian military bloggers said that they speak of replacing Wagner troops in the entire “Sahel Troika”, which includes Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Analysts note that the African Corps may not have enough resources to completely replace the Wagner Group in Mali, since some units have already been deployed in Ukraine to support the offensive in the Kharkiv region.

A large-scale replacement of Wagner after losses such as those inflicted during the recent ambush would likely result in the redeployment of some Afrika Korps fighters in Mali away from the front lines in Ukraine, and the Russian military command probably does not view a complete replacement of Wagner in Mali or anywhere in the Sahel as a priority at the moment, the report says.

Recall that the rebels in Mali are ready to hand over captured Wagner mercenaries to Ukraine. The GUR said they were aware of this information, but declined to comment on it.
