Experts say that both the erosion of the Kyiv metro tunnel and the subsidence of the soil under the kiosks near the Demeevsky market — a consequence of chaotic development without taking into account the structure of groundwater in the Lybid River.

— Any river in its valley has many sources that feed it. It was these sources that were cut off from the river itself. As a result, the water spreads underground, looking for a way out. First she washed the subway tunnel, and then reached the kiosks. These are the consequences of one phenomenon — barbaric development that interferes with the world of underground waters, — explained the director of the analytical and research center Urban Institute Alexander Sergienko.

What threatens soil subsidence on Demeevskaya Square
Experts assure that if strengthening work is not done in time, the boundary of this subsidence may spread to other land plots.
— It is right that they block traffic, because if you continue to use them, then in the event of further destruction there may be more serious consequences. However, stopping operation — these are already quite serious consequences, — says design engineer, expert on urban planning Dmitry Makogon.

A journalist on the telethon showed that the asphalt here is in a web of cracks, significant craters and ground subsidence are visible under temporary one-story buildings, where until recently there were shops.
— Workers at nearby retail outlets say they told local officials in the fall about subsidence in the area. And the Kyiv City State Administration said the day before that this situation did not pose any danger, but decided to play it safe and limited the movement of pedestrians by installing a barrier fence, — he said.
Also, according to him, there is a risk for cars, since the road passes by these gaps, so traffic here has been limited to the far right lane.
