Slovakia is ready to support the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the EU

Slovakia recognizes Ukraine’s progress on the path to European integration, therefore it is ready to support the start of negotiations on membership at the EU summit on December 14-15.

This was stated by Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar following a meeting of the EU Council of Foreign Ministers in Brussels on December 11.

— Having assessed the reform efforts in Kyiv, we are ready to support the opening of accession negotiations, which will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the European Council. However, our eastern neighbor still has a long and thorny road ahead; all necessary measures must not only be approved, but also put into practice, and their compliance must be monitored, — the diplomat emphasized.

In his opinion, Ukraine needs to focus more “on finding peaceful solutions” and the restoration of the country, which should bring it closer to EU membership.

Blanar noted that Slovakia will not provide military assistance to Ukraine, but will only continue humanitarian support, including demining territories and preparing energy infrastructure for winter.

In early November, the new government of Slovakia, headed by Prime Minister Robert Fico, refused to allocate another package of necessary military assistance to Ukraine worth more than €40 million.
