Slap Russia: political scientist explains why Putin called Xi Jinping

< p _ngcontent-sc100="" class="news-annotation">Recently, Vladimir Putin called Xi Jinping. However, the dictator failed to hear what he wanted during the conversation.

Putin wanted to meet in person, and Medvedev went to ask for this meeting. She was not agreed. Political scientist Igor Reyterovich said about this Channel 24.

“The Chinese leader 'deigned' to talk to Putin, made him a certain curtsy. Xi Jinping simply has a face that is most suitable for such meetings, because it is not at all clear what he really thinks. He seems to be smiling, but in fact he has there may be completely different thoughts,” the political scientist notes.

Two key points should be taken into account

Firstly, in the context of the meeting, Putin rushed all of himself, saying that the Russians and the Chinese are brothers forever. And he especially put pressure on the fact, Reiterovich emphasizes, that there should be very powerful military-technical cooperation between the countries. To which Xi Jinping replied: China will maintain a high level of political relations with Russia and will see how the situation develops in 2023. Consequently, Putin did not hear what he wanted.

You need to understand that all the stories of the dictator about the incredible volume of trade and fruitful cooperation with China are not supported by specific figures.

Yes, on the one hand, the turnover increased, but he (Putin – Channel 24) forgot to say that this is exclusively Chinese imports. Russia does not sell any goods, individual raw materials and resources to China, and China supplies it with everything it considers necessary, the political scientist notes.

Moreover, Putin did not say a word that China has joined the key sanctions against Russia. Although some are quite formal, says Reiterovich, he saves face and is not going to be friends with the aggressor state.

Secondly, on the eve of this meeting in China, a new person was appointed to the post of head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – this is the former Chinese ambassador to Washington, USA. On the one hand, he is known for his tough stance on protecting the interests of China, and on the other hand, for his ability to negotiate with the Americans on key issues of interest to China.

All these events and herself the tone of the conference clearly did not benefit Putin. He got nervous because he expected some other statements from the head of China, and in fact received general phrases that China operated throughout 2022, Reiterovich says.

According to the political scientist, today relations between China and Russia are at the highest level of development and protection of the national interests of the People's Republic of China. Everything is transparent here.

“To the factors that I cited, in terms of imports and bargain prices for resources, Russia is ready to sell oil, gas, timber, and gold to China almost at cost – everything that China asks for,” Reiterovich notes.

At the same time, he emphasizes that China is no longer buying so much. This is due to internal reasons related to the coronacrisis, the economy, and so on.

In 2022, China “came in and sat down” in those Asian countries that were previously considered satellites of Russia. Xi Jinping's phrase that China will guard the national interests and territorial integrity of Kazakhstan as the closest partner of China was not even a slap in the face of Russia, but a very tasty roundhouse blow. – the political scientist assures.

Of course, Russian propaganda will continue to tell that everything is super between Russia and China. At the level of some meetings, it may look like this.

“If you look at reality, at money, at the specifics of these relationships, this is the relationship of the sovereign with the vassal. It's just that this vassalage has not yet found formal confirmation in the form of specific interstate documents. But at the level of the economy, this has already happened a long time ago, and Russia is exacerbating this dependence every month,” concluded political scientist Igor Reiterovich. : see
