Several helicopters were called in to rescue people trapped on the lift and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said, that he was shocked by the messages. He expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
As foreign journalists note, the Astun ski resort is popular mainly among Spanish skiers. It is located near the Spanish border with France in the Pyrenees.
