China has not declared support for a Ukraine suffering from a Russian invasion, but has called the Russian-Ukrainian war a “Ukrainian crisis.” China is focused on relations with the United States and does not want to take part of Russia for itself.

Vita Golod, Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Association of Sinologists, told Channel 24 about this. According to her, China has confirmed that it has no territorial claims against Russia and will not take such steps.

Confrontation with the USA is in focus

Vita Golod believes that China is now focused on a certain confrontation with the United States. She refers to Chinese documents, which indicate that this confrontation is the biggest threat to China's security.

As Vita Golod noted, China is forced to defend itself in this confrontation, and therefore is looking for possible allies. This role was perfectly played by the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, who immediately declared that he supported China in all its geopolitical aspirations.

“That is, China is forced to defend itself in this confrontation. Back on February 28, there was a US Foreign Affairs Committee, where a number of laws were supported, which, of course, China will not like. Chinese companies,” said Vita Golod.

The head of the board of the Ukrainian Association of Sinologists noted that the US-Chinese confrontation is not at all in the hands of Ukraine and said that there is no need to link the situation with Taiwan to Ukraine, since the nature of these conflicts is different.

As for Russia, according to Vita Golod, China, at the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, did not begin to determine territorial claims against Russia and will continue to adhere to this principle in the future.

How China and Belarus play along with Russia

  • China has not condemned the Russian invasion and continues to ignore the crimes of the invaders. PRC officials call the war a “Ukrainian crisis” while advocating a peaceful settlement without naming the party responsible for the war.
  • Self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko visited Beijing, where he met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. This meeting may indicate that Lukashenka is seeking political protection from Russia in China.
  • Also, Lukashenka could sign agreements with China that would allow Russia to circumvent sanctions. A total of 16 documents were signed, according to which Belarus can become a “buffer” between China and Russia.
