Britain will give Ukraine two mine-resistant ships/Collage 24 Channel

The UK will join Norway in leading the new maritime coalition. As part of the new initiative, the UK will transfer two Sandown-class mine clearance ships to Ukraine.

This is stated in a statement by the UK Ministry of Defense. Grant Shepps emphasized that this initiative is aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian aggression at sea, reports Channel 24.

New coalition to support Ukraine

Great Britain, together with Norway, will lead a new coalition to support Ukraine – a maritime one. It will provide long-term support to Ukraine, including training, equipment and infrastructure to strengthen security in the Black Sea.

As part of the new coalition, the UK will transfer 2 Sandown-class mine-resistant ships to Ukraine. Schepps will announce the new assistance on December 11 during a meeting with the Norwegian Minister of Defense. In addition, the UK Ministry of Defense reports that Shepps will confirm additional details of military assistance during the meeting.

The Ukrainian economy continues to be affected by Putin's blockade in Black Sea, significantly reducing the country's ability to transport vital export goods by sea. Strengthening the maritime potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in particular countering the threat of Russian sea mines, will help restore Ukraine’s maritime exports, noted the UK Ministry of Defense.

It is known that the maritime coalition will operate for a long time. Allies are seeking to help Ukraine transform its navy, make it more compatible with Western allies and NATO, and strengthen security in the Black Sea.

“These minesweepers will provide Ukraine with vital capability that will help save lives at sea and open up vital export routes that have been severely restricted since the start of Putin's illegal full-scale invasion. This increase in capability marks the start of a new, focused effort by the UK, Norway and our allies to strengthen maritime capability Ukraine in the long term,” Shepps emphasized.

The UK Ministry of Defense also added that the new coalition will work closely with the Ukrainian Navy and the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to develop a number of opportunities, including the rapid development of naval forces in the Black Sea, the continued development of the Ukrainian marines and river patrol ships to protect coastal and inland waterways
