Shelling resumed on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan: countries blame each other

by alex

On the morning of September 14, Armenia announced the resumption of offensive and shelling from Azerbaijan. Those, in turn, accused the Armenian troops of violating the ceasefire.

The Armenian Ministry of Defense claims that on Wednesday morning Azerbaijan resumed offensive operations in the direction of the settlements of Jermuk and Verin Shorzha, using artillery, mortars and large-caliber small arms.

It is also reported that Azerbaijan used attack drones in the direction of Jermuk.

Azerbaijan, in turn, stated that the Armed Forces of Armenia “again violated the ceasefire and on the night of September 13-14” and opened fire on the units located in the Kelbajar and Lachin regions from mortars and artillery of various calibers in the morning.

Our units located in this direction are taking appropriate response measures, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Armenia earlier applied to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which, following a meeting on Tuesday, decided to send a mission to Armenia led by Secretary General Stanislav Zas to assess the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

Key points about the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan

  • The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been going on since the 1990s. The previous serious episode was extinguished in the fall of 2020, when Russian peacekeepers were brought into Nagorno-Karabakh.
  • On September 13, the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia became restless again. Both countries announced shelling and provocations, and the Armenian prime minister even called Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron.
  • However, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry stressed that the “invasion of the territory of Armenia” is nothing more than nonsense. They believe that Armenia is an aggressor and occupier in the region. In addition, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry accused Armenia and its leadership of provocations.
  • On the same day, September 13, the countries allegedly agreed on a ceasefire.
