The first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina spoke about her emotions from the trip to her homeland and the reaction of her husband Gael Monfils to her decision to visit Ukraine.
She recalled that during a visit to Ukraine in February, she was quite sad about the blackouts and she “felt bad really.”
“Now I already knew what to expect, what to prepare for. But the weather was good, I was looking forward to seeing my grandmother and relatives, and somehow I didn’t pay much attention to other moments. Yes, there were concerns, and I, of course, try to follow the safety rules, but overall I feel great emotions about being here,” the athlete admitted.
Svitolina admitted that she had been preparing her husband, tennis player Gael Monfils, for about two months for her plans to visit Ukraine.

“When I told him that I was going, he took it very hard. “As I understand it myself, they don’t fully understand what’s happening here… That is, they’re watching on television about some events… I understand that this is a stressful situation for him, for him this is some kind of incomprehensible step,” she said athlete.
She added that for two months she told Monfils that she wanted to go to her grandmother, stay in Ukraine, because she has a lot to do with the foundation with United24, and also visit Kharkov and Odessa.
Svitolina said: I want to go home, because not only Odessa and Kharkov are my home, but all of Ukraine as a whole. And when I come here, it’s an incredibly cool emotion every time.
Svitolina's trip to the military
During a visit to Ukraine, Svitolina, together with the writer Sergei Zhadanov, visited the military and brought them military aid.
On November 10, the tennis player published several photos from a trip to the military volunteer unit Charter. Svitolina said that this unit has been supporting since the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion.
