Bit off 9 kg of flesh: a 65-year-old Ukrainian woman was attacked by a shark in New York while swimming

The first shark attack in 60 years was recorded on Rockaway Beach in New York. The victim was 65-year-old Ukrainian Tatyana Koltunyuk.

The New York Times writes about this, citing a report from the authorities.

It is reported that the shark bit the woman on her left leg. The police report notes that Koltunyuk swam alone. After the rescuers heard her cries for help, they pulled her out of the water and provided first aid by applying a tourniquet.

Now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is checking this information, Oleg Nikolenko, a spokesman for the department, said in a commentary to Air Force Ukraine.

The woman was then taken to the hospital in critical condition. The police said that her condition is assessed as “serious but stable”.

The police report notes that the shark bit off 9 kg of flesh from the woman, but The NYT believes the numbers are significantly inflated after reviewing the images.

The Parks Department said that shark bites are extremely rare in Rockaway. After the incident, rescuers ordered everyone out of the water. Helicopters combed the water, but not a single shark was found. The beach was closed to swimming and surfing on Tuesday.

The newspaper notes that this is the first confirmed shark attack in New York since the 1950s, according to the Global Shark Attack Database. The last documented shark bite in the city, entered into the database, occurred in 1958.
