22-year-old Elizabeth Novotna Olšanská from Prague experienced a rare medical case for the Czech Republic: during an appendix operation, she remained conscious and saw with her own eyes how the surgeon cut into her stomach and removed the inflamed organ. The woman refused general anesthesia due to her pregnancy, despite the insistence of doctors, the report says.
Surgery without anesthesia: what the doctors and the woman herself said
It all happened at the end of June, when Elizabeth went to visit her parents in Morava for the weekend. But on Monday, instead of returning to Prague, she found herself in the operating room in Prostejov with acute abdominal pain. Doctors quickly diagnosed appendicitis, requiring urgent surgery.
However, the expectant mother insisted on the procedure being performed without general anesthesia, so as not to expose the child to risks. The doctors warned about discomfort, but agreed.

“I couldn't feel my body below the waist. But in the light of the lamps I saw the surgeon cutting the skin and getting inside. They told me to turn away, but I was interested,” Elizabeth told reporters.
Such cases are an exception in Czech practice. According to doctors, the operation went without complications, the patient was satisfied and thanked the team for their professionalism and support.
Doctors note that general anesthesia is usually a safer and more comfortable option.
