Data from the General Electoral Commission released on the evening of Sunday, May 26, showed that Nausėda won 77.17% of the votes counted. At the same time, the rival of the current president, Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, received only 21.28%.

It is worth noting that Simonyte had already admitted defeat and congratulated Nausėda on his victory.

“I would like to congratulate the elected president of Lithuania,” the politician told reporters.

Ingrida Simonyte also said that she would return to work as prime minister on Monday. According to her, this position did not help her during the campaign for the presidential elections.

According to the Lithuanian Electoral Commission, the turnout in the second round of elections was just over 50%.< /p>

The position of politicians regarding the war

Previously, Lithuanian presidential candidates said that they would not go to Moscow and would not meet with Vladimir Putin , unless Russia withdraws from annexed Crimea.

Both candidates said they planned to maintain a “strict tone” in relations with Moscow, while sometimes relaxing the “strict rhetoric.”

It is also interesting that Lithuanian intelligence services previously warned that Russia and China were preparing to influence the election results. Then the director of the Department of State Security, Darius Jauniskis, stated that not only information campaigns or cyber attacks, but also “mining” of polling stations could be used to disrupt the electoral process or influence the election results.
