Scholz's party wants to nominate Pistorius for the post of German Chancellor, – Spiegel Vladislav Kravtsov

Early parliamentary elections will be held in Germany in February 2025. The SPD, to which Olaf Scholz belongs, wants to nominate a person other than the current chancellor for the post of head of government.

The party sees the current head of the German Ministry of Defense, Boris Pistorius, in this post. This was reported by 24 Kanal with reference to the Spiegel publication.

Why the SPD sees Pistorius as chancellor

According to the publication, members of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) announced at a closed meeting the need to consider the issue of changing the leadership candidate in the upcoming elections. For the first time, some party representatives have suggested that the more popular Defense Minister Boris Pistorius should be nominated to replace current Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

During a recent meeting of the Seeheimer Kreis, an influential group of conservative SPD members of the Bundestag, criticism was voiced regarding Chancellor Olaf Scholz's standing in Germany. Jo Weingarten, a representative of Rhineland-Palatinate, said that Scholz's reputation is currently “at rock bottom” among the German population.

In turn, Christian Schreiber from Ludwigshafen expressed his inability to unite party members in support of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's election campaign. Schreiber noted that enthusiasm among party members had waned, with many saying they no longer wanted to participate in the campaign.

By the way, the government coalition in Germany recently collapsed after Chancellor Olaf Scholz fired Finance Minister Christian Lindner. In turn, the current German chancellor plans for the Bundestag to hold a vote of confidence in the government in January 2025.
