German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi will visit Kyiv. This will happen before the G7 summit, which is scheduled for late June.
As the media writes, the trip will take place on June 16th. Note that Scholz has so far avoided visiting Ukraine.
Scholz, Macron and Draghi want to demonstrate European unity with their trip. However, if the President of the European Commission von der Leyen, during her visit to Kyiv on June 11, advocated the admission of Ukraine to the European Union, whether Scholz and Macron will support her proposal is still unclear.
Why didn't politicians come earlier
Emmanuel Macron agreed to visit only after the parliamentary elections in France, which will be held on June 12. At the same time, CNN reported, citing a source, that Macron may decide to visit Ukraine after the decision of the European Union to grant Ukraine candidate status for EU membership.
On June 3, Macron said that he did not rule out his visit to Ukraine in the near future, but stated that he was ready to visit Ukraine only if it would be useful.
I am ready to come to Kyiv or any other city in Ukraine, but I will not do this just to visit the embassy,” he said.
Let's add that Scholz until recently avoided visiting Ukraine. He also stated that he wanted to visit Kyiv only for specific purposes, “not for a photo shoot.”
Last week he traveled to the Western Balkans to show support for Kosovo, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Bosnia on their way to joining the EU.
Position on Russia's war against Ukraine
Scholz, Macron and Draghi publicly advocate a diplomatic settlement of Russia's war against Ukraine, while also providing military assistance to Kyiv. German and French leaders regularly call Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, trying to convince him to carry out certain humanitarian missions and end the war.
