When asked why Germany would not send tanks to Ukraine, Scholz said that this was a very dangerous war. According to Scholz, Germany does not want to provoke an expansion of the scale of the war.
Scholz is afraid of a conflict between NATO and Russia
In particular, the German chancellor believes that the supply of tanks to Ukraine could lead to a conflict between NATO and Russia.
This is a very dangerous war. We support Ukraine. We do it in such a way as not to bring the situation to a state of war between Russia and NATO, because that would be a disaster. – said Scholz.
The leader of Germany stressed that his country “really does a lot” in support of Ukraine. According to Scholz, Germany sent Ukraine “a huge mass of very effective weapons.”
Scholz found another reason not to give tanks
It should be noted that recently Olaf Scholz named another reason, why Germany refuses to supply tanks to Ukraine. He said that Germany is inactive on its own in matters of military assistance to Ukraine.
At the same time, Scholz said that Germany could focus on air defense systems and artillery for Ukraine. Scholz made an identical statement at a meeting of the UN General Assembly when he said that Britain and the United States did not provide such powerful weapons to Ukraine. including tanks. The head of the government of Ukraine noted that the Ukrainian military needed battle tanks to fight off Russian attackers.
Recently, the German parliament failed to vote for the proposal of the CDU/CSU Opposition Bloc on the immediate supply of tanks and other armored vehicles to Ukraine. Deputies of the coalition and members of the “left” faction opposed it.
Scholz's argument that the United States and Britain did not provide Ukraine with such weapons was criticized by Volodymyr Zelensky. He emphasized that more people would die without tanks, but noted that Ukraine would win without German tanks.
