Canadian military intelligence conducted an analysis of the latest Russian statements about the war in Ukraine. According to the results, the Kremlin continues to set maximalist goals.
As noted in the intelligence of Canada, Russia has constantly stated that it is open to negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. But in fact, this is not the case – the Kremlin continues to demonstrate commitment to its maximalist military goals, and this contradicts the above statements.
What are the maximalist military goals?
As an example, Canadian intelligence noted that Russia puts its own conditions before any peace agreements. First of all, we are talking about the Kremlin's insistence on maintaining control over the four partially occupied regions of Ukraine.
Russia knows that its preconditions are not a starting point for Ukraine. This indicates that Russia is not yet willing to negotiate a bona fide peace deal, Canadian intelligence officials say.
Peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia: what happened before
- Russia has repeatedly stated its desire to negotiate with Ukraine. True, the Kremlin continues to speak the language of ultimatums and is not going to make any concessions.
- Given this, Ukraine has banned any negotiations with Russia at the legislative level. According to Kyiv's statements, they will take place only when Russia withdraws its troops from the territory of Ukraine and the borders of the latter return to the 1991 borders. Or already with the new Russian authorities.
- In particular, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba commented on this as follows: “The territorial integrity of Ukraine must be fully restored. We have learned a bitter lesson: if you give Russia the little finger, it will cut off the whole hand.”
- At the same time, Viktor Nazarov, adviser to Valery Zaluzhny, suggested that peace negotiations could take place when Ukraine drives the enemy out of the occupied territories, primarily from Kherson and Zaporozhye. The military leader added that the north of the Lugansk region also remains important.
- According to him, as a result, Russia will lose the land corridor and Crimea will also be under threat. In addition, Russian troops will move back to their borders, and this is precisely what the Kremlin is now trying to prevent.
