Russians tortured Ukrainians to death in occupied territories: UN collected new evidence

Russian methods of torture in the occupied territories were so brutal that some victims were tortured to death. The UN has already collected additional evidence of violations of international conventions by the occupiers.

This was stated by the head of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry into Violations in Ukraine, Eric Mese. He and a team of investigators visited the deoccupied territories of Kherson and Zaporozhye.

Messe told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that his team had collected additional evidence of torture committed by Russians in the occupied territories. He stressed that the torture was widespread and systematic.

In some cases, torture was used with such cruelty that it led to the death of the victim, Messe said.

By the way, the Messe commission found that torture was carried out mainly in the so-called “detention centers” and “pretrial detention centers” run by the Russian authorities. Most of the victims who died at the hands of the invaders, according to the UN, were partisans and informed the Ukrainian Armed Forces about the actions of the Russian invaders.

In addition, the UN also collected evidence of mass rape in the occupied territories. In particular, the commission received confirmation that only in the occupied part of the right bank of the Kherson region did the Russians rape women from 18 to 83 years old. Moreover, the occupiers forced the women's families to sit in neighboring rooms and listen to how they were violated.

Answering the question about the number of cases of such torture that ended in death in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, commission member Pablo de Greiff replied that it is now difficult to name the exact number. However, this number, according to him, is very large.

What kind of torture does Russia use against Ukrainians

UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other forms of cruelty , inhumane treatment, punishment or acts degrading human dignity Alice Jill Edwards visited Kiev in early September. She spent about a week collecting information about the crimes of torture of Ukrainians by Russians during the Russian invasion, as well as data on the investigation of such cases.

So, she established that the “standard” list of torture includes:

• use of electric shocks to the ears and genitals;
• beatings of all kinds;
• imitation of the death penalty at gunpoint;
• imitation of drowning;

• forcement to be in uncomfortable positions;
• threat of rape or death;
• various actions aimed at humiliating the dignity of prisoners.
