The Russians detained 2 Turkish fishing boats in the Black Sea, on which there were 12 fishermen. They were on their way to Istanbul when they were detained near the coast of the occupied Crimea.

Russian authorities confiscated the fish and fined the fishermen $30,000. Since May 18, they have been in Russian-controlled territory and have not been in touch.

What happened

On May 15, two fishing boats, one of which registered in Gemlik, and the other in the harbor of Sarier, went to the Black Sea. In total, there were 12 fishermen on the boats.

They hunted near the Crimean coast and caught about 1,500 halibuts. On May 18, the boats came closer to the Crimea, after which a Russian warship intervened and the fishermen were detained.

After that, the fishermen called their relatives, informing them of the situation. It is known that subsequently fishing boats were delivered to the outskirts of Sevastopol, accompanied by warships.

The Russian authorities confiscated the fish and boats and fined the fishermen $30,000. It is reported that the fishermen were waiting for trial on their boats, but it is not known exactly where they are now.

Turkish reaction

Rumelifeneri Fishing Cooperative President Yasar Sert said that both boats are not registered and do not have licenses. According to him, these are pirate boats engaged in poaching.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has made diplomatic attempts to bring the fishermen to Turkey. It is not possible to contact them by phone.

Recently, the aggressor country announced green corridors in the Black Sea

  • Recently, Russia cynically announced that it had opened safe routes in the Black Sea for civilian shipping, namely for the export of grain from Ukraine.
  • The navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine noted that information from Russia about safe routes in the Black Sea is manipulation. The Navy emphasized that only those agreed upon by international treaties can be truly safe routes. And their security guarantors should be civilized countries.
  • The US State Department did not believe in the good faith of the Russians.
