Analysts at the American Institute for the Study of War spoke about large-scale failures in the operation of GPS systems in Poland and the Baltic region. Experts suggested that Russia could be involved in this incident.

ISW emphasized that the aggressor country could be training to jam GPS from the Kaliningrad region . This may be a consequence of the work of Russian electronic warfare systems in the region.

ISW talked about the possible jamming of GPS systems from Russia

The Institute for the Study of War, citing the Polish radio station Radio Zet, noted that data from the GPS jamming tracking site GPSJAM on January 16 indicated an unprecedentedly high level of GPS jamming. This particularly occurred in northern and eastern Poland, including Warsaw, and in the southern city of Lodz.

“These data also show similar high levels of GPS interference in the southern part Baltic Sea and northwestern and central Poland between December 25 – 27, 2023 and January 10, 2024,” experts write.

In the end, Polish media believe that disruptions in December 2023 could have been caused by unknown NATO military exercises in the Baltic region or electronic warfare tests in the Kaliningrad region of Russia.

Analysts also emphasized that the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service has already opened a case regarding obstructions on January 12 in the context of electronic warfare exercises of the Russian Baltic Fleet.

Swedish Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi believes that the situation with GPS is the result of “Russian influence activities or so-called hybrid warfare.” Russia has already interfered with GPS signals in northern Europe to hide its activities in the Murmansk region or disrupt NATO training, he said. – says the ISW report.

In addition, experts, citing Russian media data, claim that since mid-December 2023, units of the Russian Baltic Fleet have been training with an electronic warfare system “Borisoglebsk-2” in the Kaliningrad region.

In conclusion, the Institute for the Study of War said that they could not independently verify the cause of the high level of GPS interference. However, they emphasized that electronic warfare systems in the Kaliningrad region are indeed capable of significantly influencing Poland and the Baltic region.

At the same time in ISW announced the successful operation of Ukrainian electronic warfare

  • The Institute for the Study of War noted that during a massive attack on Ukraine on January 13, more than 20 Russian air attack weapons were not achieved their goals. This happened thanks to the active work of the Ukrainian electronic warfare.
  • Analysts emphasized that previously the Defense Forces actively used electronic warfare systems to combat drones, but not missiles. Therefore, this could become a turning point in the operation of the complexes.
  • In the end, ISW suggested that Russian attacks were becoming a pattern for Ukrainian defenders. After all, the blow on January 13 was similar to the one on January 8.
