Russians in the spring and summer of 2022 began to actively buy potassium iodide, which they take to protect against radiation. In addition, they began to stock up on devices for measuring the level of radiation.
This is evidenced by the data of analysts from online retailers Moneyplace, who announced a surge in demand for these products.
with the fact that earlier the media disseminated information about the alleged disappearance of potassium iodide tablets from pharmacies in the United States. They were dismantled, making reserves in case of a nuclear war.
In Russia, on the Ozon and Wildberries marketplaces, sales of potassium iodide and preparations containing it increased by:
- 103% in April compared to March 2022,
- 40% in May compared to April,
- by 42% in July compared to June.
What is known about potassium iodide and who needs it
Potassium iodide (stable isotope iodine-127) is recommended for people in the zone of radiation damage to neutralize the radioactive isotope iodine-131. The latter is one of the most dangerous decay products of nuclear fuel, which can accumulate in the thyroid gland and cause malignant neoplasms. According to an IAEA study, from 1991 to 2015, 20,000 cases of thyroid cancer were registered in Belarus, Ukraine and four regions of Russia, whose residents suffered from the Chernobyl disaster as children. Every fourth case, according to experts, was a consequence of Chernobyl.
Moneyplace also studied the dynamics of sales of products, the name of which contains the phrase from radiation. According to him, from August 1 to August 22, the total sales of dosimeters for measuring radiation at Ozon and Wildberries increased by 161% compared to July.
The threat of an explosion at the ZNPP: the main thing
- The occupiers have mined the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and cynically threaten to blow it up if Ukraine regains control of the plant. Ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin told Channel 24 that anything can be expected from Vladimir Putin. Including the use of nuclear weapons. And the actions of infidels on the territory of the Zaporozhye NPP may well lead to disaster.
- The actions of the Russian invaders have already led to the first complete shutdown of the Zaporizhzhya NPP in history. Despite the provocation of the enemy, the level of radiation in Energodar is still normal.
- Ukraine is ready to accept the IAEA mission at the Zaporozhye NPP. However, as adviser to the head of the Office of the President Mikhail Podolyak said, the Russian Federation is trying in every possible way to gain control over this delegation.
