How Russia is transferring troops from Syria

Russian military personnel are preparing to remove weapons and equipment from the naval base in Tartus, Syria. There are also mercenaries from the so-called “African Corps” operating under the control of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

On January 5, 2025, the large landing ships Ivan Gren and Alexander Otrakovsky, as well as the dry cargo ship Sparta, are expected to arrive in the port of Tartus. These ships are currently heading through the Mediterranean Sea to the Syrian coast.

On board the Otrakovsky is the chief of staff of the 121st brigade of Russian landing ships, Captain 1st Rank Yuri Davityan.

On January 8, 2025, two more ships are expected to arrive in Tartus: the general-purpose cargo ship Sparta II and the tanker Ivan Skobelev, which are currently moving towards the Strait of Gibraltar. Russia plans to use the Sparta and Sparta II ships to transport military equipment from Syria to Libya.

The Admiral Golovko frigate, which is part of the Russian Navy's operational group in the Mediterranean, plans to refuel.

Meanwhile, in Russia, at an airfield in the Vladimir region, armored personnel carriers were spotted that were probably taken out of Syria.
