Russians are improving Shahed drones, but there is no AI in them – Defense Ministry

Russia is upgrading its Shahed-type attack drones, making them harder to counter. However, the drone is not capable of making complex decisions.

Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine for Digitalization Valeriy Churkin told DOU about this.

Do the Shaheds have AI technology?

According to him, Shahed is a simple, stable platform that can be improved. And that is what the Russians are doing.

In particular, the enemy made the Comet modules more resistant to electronic warfare (EW) and added more communication channels. Therefore, the drones became more difficult to “spoof”.

Churkin noted that there is no artificial intelligence in the drone itself, but it is probably a matter of time.

— There is no (AI technology — Ed.) on Shahed itself, it does not make complex decisions. For now. But it is probably a matter of time. Both we and the Russians are actively working on this. Now Shahed carries out a programmed sequence of actions with control elements, — said the Deputy Minister of Defense.

The latest versions of the drones already have a guidance system installed. Churkin emphasized that adding functions that allow the drone to perform more complex tasks will increase the Shahed's flight range and its efficiency factor.

— The same as we upgrade FPV drones. We installed guidance on a regular drone, and its quality of use increased by 30%. And we are thinking about how to achieve even greater efficiency. We are waiting for the release of a drone that will be the main means of destruction from a thousand kilometers away, — he added.
