Russian troops have lost over 420,000 soldiers on the front since the beginning of 2024, – ISW Polina Buyanova

Russian troops lost more than 420 thousand people in the war against Ukraine in 2024. At the same time, the occupiers managed to capture 4168 square kilometers.

This is reported by 24 Channel with reference to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). It is noted that the territories that the Russians managed to occupy mainly consist of fields and small settlements.

What are the losses of the Russian army at the front

ISW reported that the greatest advance of the Russians took place from September to November 2024 – that was when the occupiers received 56.5% of all territorial gains. During this offensive, Russia lost 125,800 troops.

However, in December 2024, the advance of Russian troops slowed down. According to the Institute for the Study of War, the Russians gained 593 square kilometers in December, and the number of daily casualties of the occupiers remained high.

The Russian military command likely allowed a record level of personnel losses from September to November 2024 to facilitate greater territorial gains, but it remains unclear whether the Russian military command will be ready to bear such losses if the pace of Russian troop advance continues to slow, the ISW report said.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said on December 24 that 440,000 new recruits have signed contracts for military service with the Defense Ministry in 2024. According to ISW, this is an attempt by the Russian authorities to compensate for high losses at the front.
