Russian propaganda is a multi-headed hydra: its methods in Ukraine and how to counter them

Recently, Russian propagandists have changed their rhetoric and are increasingly talking about the likely defeat of Russia in a war that could lead to to its breakup.

About thisChannel 24said media expert and fact-checker Alyona Romanyuk. In her opinion, such propaganda narratives of the aggressor country are aimed at mobilizing internal potential within Russia, as well as at intimidating Russians, causing them even more fear and continuing to send those mobilized to the front.

Russian propaganda tries to quarrel Ukrainians

According to her, Russian propaganda has many faces, it is a many-headed hydra. After all, she directs other narratives to a different part of the Russian audience: “we are winning”, “we need to squeeze a little more”, etc.

Russian propaganda acts on Russians with messages alone. She directs completely different methods at Ukrainian citizens, and now she is trying to quarrel us among themselves, – the media expert believes.

She noted that propagandists use controversial topics, to which there are ambiguous answers. They also spread hostility between people as much as possible.

Bots fuel part of the conflicts in social networks

“Remember what conflicts have recently been in social networks: whether or not to put up a Christmas tree for the New Year. Some of these conflicts were artificially fueled by bots in order to incite emotions, anger, rage. puts,” she stressed.

The media expert stressed that with such messages they are trying to drive us into a hopeless situation from which there is no right way out.

“In fact, the war has touched almost every Ukrainian. And the military is fighting at the front, in particular, so that life continues in the rear, children rejoice and people can live as normal as possible in the current conditions,” Romaniuk said.

A fake is not harmful until it is spread

According to her, Russian propagandists throw in a lot of fakes and manipulative theses and look for different drop points. Among them are traditional media, garbage sites, pseudo-experts, You Tube, and instant messengers.

The question is what will work. A fake is not harmful until it is massively distributed and until people begin to believe in it as the truth. Therefore, it is very important that Ukrainians, before distributing any information received in the messenger, say “stop” to themselves and ask the question: where does this information come from? she noted.

Factchecker believes that before distributing any information in the messenger, it is important to remember that we live in a war: a rocket can fly anywhere and anytime – there is not a single safe place. Anything can be expected from the enemy and its actions cannot be predicted.

“We must be prepared for anything, but there is no point in spreading panic. It is better to drink tea than to spread another rumor that can be aimed at discrediting our government, the military, volunteers, or to spread panic,” she stressed.

“Digital Detox”

Propaganda can overwhelm Ukrainians and its narratives can drive them into panic or anxiety. According to the media expert, a “digital detox” helps to set yourself up against Russian propaganda. It is necessary to leave the information space, go into real life, do what you love and meet friends.

“I recommend not reading the news 24/7, but choosing an hour in the morning, half an hour in the afternoon and an hour in the evening for this. Then we have time to recover: when you heard some shocking news and reacted emotionally to it, you need time to perceive it rationally. And then we understand that everything is not quite as they are trying to convince us,” summed up Alena Romanyuk.

Fakes from Russian propaganda

  • The Russian occupiers are trying in every possible way to undermine the situation in Ukraine by various manipulations. According to the speaker of the Odessa Regional Military Administration, Sergei Bratchuk, the topic of Transnistria has already subsided, but they are “raising” old-new fakes and switched to manipulating the offensive from Belarus.
  • Whatever happens at the front, the Russians are confident continue to create more and more ridiculous fakes about their “successes”. However, the propagandists and producers of fakes overdid it a bit. They created a fake about an American tank destroyed near Soledar, inside of which there was an African American. But here's the problem – the United States has not yet provided such weapons to Ukraine.
  • Kremlin propagandists continue to spread regular absurd fakes about Poland's alleged “encroachment” on part of the territory of Ukraine. They published a fake map on social networks imitating the weather forecast on a Polish TV channel. Putin's liars painted that Poland “ends” near Kyiv. Stanislav Zharin, the Government Commissioner for the Security of the Information Space of Poland, reacted to this, noting that Russian propagandists continue the anti-Polish information campaign.
