The Russian Federation will need 5-7 years to restore its combat capability, but this will depend on the results of the war in Ukraine.
This opinion was expressed by Czech President Petr Pavel at a press conference following the meeting of heads of state of the Visegrad Group (V4) in Prague on November 22.
— According to modern calculations, Russia will need at least 5-7 years to restore its combat capability. On the other hand, there are many conditions in these calculations that can change the situation. “Much will depend on what the result of the war will be, how Ukraine and Russia will emerge from it,” he said.

Pavel noted that under any conditions, not only the Czech Republic perceives Russia as the number one real threat in Europe, but also all NATO countries. Therefore, in his opinion, we need to really prepare, and the EU armies are doing this. More defense spending is being planned, as well as the quality of troop training and planning.
“All of us in NATO perceive this situation as serious, although we definitely don’t want it,” says Pavel.
He is confident that Ukraine’s support is important for the security of the V4 countries.
“The Russian Federation must answer for the crimes and murders it has committed, as well as for the damage caused, so we need to continue to support Ukraine and Ukrainians, this is in line with our national interests,” he says.
The politician admitted that the approaches of the V4 countries to some issues sometimes differ, but regarding the Ukrainian issue, during the current meeting there were no “diametrically opposed views.”
All leaders were unanimous in the opinion that the direct interest of all states is for “Ukraine to achieve success, but Russia not.”
