Russia intends to place nuclear weapons in space. According to ABC News sources, this is precisely what the Republican Party's “threat to national security” warning is about.

According to the publication, Russia wants to use nuclear weapons in space against satellites.

National security threat

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and top lawmakers in Congress sought to assuage public concerns Wednesday after the House Intelligence Committee chairman warned of a national security threat posed by destabilizing “foreign military capabilities.”

The publication's sources note that US intelligence is related to Russia's desire to send nuclear weapons into space.

It is worth noting that this is not about to drop nuclear weapons on Earth, but rather about their possible use against satellites.

Also, according to ABC News sources, this topic is alarming and very sensitive. Without addressing the issue directly, several members of Congress quickly called the issue serious without causing public alarm.

How lawmakers are responding

We're going to work together to solve this how we handle all the sensitive issues that are classified,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters.

Rep. Jim Himes, a Connecticut Democrat and ranking member of the House intelligence agency, repeated this in his own statement. He called the warning “significant” but said it was “no cause for panic.”

“As for whether more information could be declassified on the matter, it's worth discussing, but it's not a discussion that should be had in public,” Himes said.

What preceded it: briefly

  • Ohio GOP Rep. Mike Turner, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said in a statement that his panel “has provided information to all members of Congress a serious threat to national security.”
  • A letter sent to members of Congress from Turner and Himes states that the threat involves “destabilizing foreign military capabilities that everyone should be aware of congressional politics.”
  • Jake Sullivan said at a press briefing on February 14 that he had already scheduled a secret meeting with congressional leadership prior to Turner's request.
  • Reporters tried to press Sullivan about the intelligence request, but he refused to specifically say whether there would be a meeting on Thursday, February 15, to discuss the reported threat.
