The Russian media are already spreading that the EU is already discussing a new package of sanctions against Russia, which are planning to ban the issuance of Schengen visas to Russians.
The point is that the proposal was made by “some countries in the EU”, but it is not specified exactly. At the same time, the media allegedly represent the position of Germany.
“The German government must now hold discussions on it between cabinet members and within the EU. These discussions are not completed, so I cannot report on interim results,” they quote edition of Hebestreit.
EU countries understand the need for restrictions
The idea of banning the issuance of visas to Russians was supported by Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Kallas, who believes that traveling to Europe is a privilege, not a human right. Also, Poland has repeatedly proposed to limit the issuance of visas to Russian citizens.
A number of countries have imposed sanctions in response to Russia's military aggression in Ukraine:
- Latvia , Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Estonia have already suspended the issuance of visas to Russians.
- Denmark and the Netherlands do not issue short-stay visas.
- Some Finnish MPs are in favor of similar restrictions, and the Finnish authorities are already considering this step.
- Germany, on the other hand, wants to make it easier for Russian human rights defenders, activists and journalists to enter.

The European Commission hopes that this will send a powerful signal to Moscow that Europe will push as much as necessary. Among the restrictions is an embargo on Russian gold. The assets of the Russian Sberbank will also be frozen. Personal restrictions will also be significantly strengthened – more than 50 Russians were included in the list.
