Russia Relies on Armored Vehicles from Storage: ISW Analyzes Whether the Enemy Will Have Enough

Russian troops continue to rely heavily on refurbished tanks and armored vehicles taken from storage to replace equipment lost during combat. However, the occupiers will probably not be able to withstand these losses in the long term.

This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Will the Russian Federation have enough armored vehicles from storage

It is noted that on November 13, Viktor Kevlyuk, an expert at the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies, said that the Russian army continues to produce and restore about 150-160 new tanks per month — about 1920 tanks per year.

This is approximately equal to the current coefficient of replacement of equipment losses of the Russian Armed Forces.

According to the Dutch open source project Oryx, the Russian army has lost about 3,558 tanks since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine. At the same time, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian Federation lost 9,319 tanks during the full-scale invasion.

According to Kevlyuk, approximately 30% of all Russian tanks produced in a year (about 567 out of 1,344 tanks produced in a year) are newly manufactured tanks. However, the remaining 70% are being taken out of storage by the Russian invaders.

In addition, the expert noted that according to the latest British intelligence, if Russia continues to take tanks and armored combat vehicles out of storage at the same rate, it will exhaust its own reserves by the fall of 2025.

At the same time, in February of this year, the British International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated that the Russian army would likely be able to withstand about 3,000 annual losses of equipment for at least the next two to three years by reactivating vehicles from storage.

In turn, earlier, Ukrainian military observer Konstantin Mashovets estimated that the Russian defense industrial base can produce about 250-300 new tanks and additionally repair 250-300 tanks per year.

Note that recently, in two weeks, Ukrainian special forces successfully destroyed 16 Russian Grad multiple launch rocket systems.
