Russian Defense Ministry lost a quarter of its military aircraft Il-76. The cause was poor-quality parts.

Russian media say that we are talking about modernized Il-76MD-90A, designed to transport troops and cargo. Moscow investigators have already opened a criminal case against the supplier, writes 24 Channel.

5 aircraft failed due to poor-quality bearings

The supplier provided the Russian Ministry of Defense with poor-quality bearings. According to the investigation, the Balashikha Foundry and Mechanical Plant purchased them from an unknown manufacturer. The bearings do not meet the documentation requirements.

The poor-quality parts were transferred to the Aviastar enterprise for the production of Il-76MD-90A aircraft. In total, 5 aircraft failed due to problems with the chassis.

According to Important Stories, the Ministry of Defense had a total of 18 such aircraft at its disposal at the end of 2023. 11 of them were delivered in 2022–2023.

A criminal case was opened under the article on “abuse of power in the implementation of a state defense order.” They believe that Russia allegedly “caused significant damage to its defense capability and security.” The plant has already been searched and management has been questioned.

The investigation was able to establish that bearings were purchased using forged documents from 2017 to 2022.
