Russia's recruitment of foreigners
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tharaka Balasuriya announced an agreement between Russia and Sri Lanka that the Russian Federation will stop recruiting citizens of the island state into the Russian army.
Previously, AFP reported that at least 22 Sri Lankan citizens who fought against Ukraine on the side of Russia were able to escape and return to their homeland.
Sri Lankan Defense Ministry spokesman Nalin Herath told AFP that Russia has deceived many Sri Lankans into serving in the Russian army. Thus, one Sri Lankan citizen said that he arrived in Russia for a promised job as a driver. Instead, he was given a machine gun and sent to war in Ukraine.
It was previously reported that Russian special services are actively recruiting citizens of Syria, Nepal, Afghanistan, India, Congo, Egypt and Central Asian countries for the war against Ukraine. Foreign mercenaries are mainly sent to storm the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
In May, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense reported that mercenaries from Nepal were deserting en masse from the occupying units of the Russian army.
