Russia refuses to completely encircle the Armed Forces of Ukraine
At the same time, Russian forces are trying to secure smaller environments that can allow them to achieve gradual and measured progress.
The Russian armed forces are trying to simultaneously achieve so-called “cauldrons” in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. We are talking about three “cauldrons”:
- the wider area of Severodonetsk (including Rubizhne and Lysichansk);
- Bakhmut-Lysichansk, around Zolote (northeast of Popasna);
- around the Ukrainian fortifications at Avdiivka.
The Russians have begun a steady push forward in these various environments, but have not achieved a single major “breakthrough”. The invaders failed to ensure the security of the borders of the Donetsk region or capture the entire Donbass.
What is the situation in the Donbass
- The head of the Lugansk OVA Serhiy Gaidai said that Ukraine controls only 10% of the territory in the Lugansk region. The aggressor's troops are advancing on Severodonetsk. At the same time, he reported that the occupiers were advancing in all directions in the Luhansk region.
- According to Gaidai, the fighting for Severodonetsk continues day and night. The Russian military is trying to destroy the city.
- On May 21, the Russian armed forces destroyed the bridge between Severodonetsk and Lisichansk for the second time. They are also trying to capture the Bakhmut-Lysichansk highway and cut off the Luhansk region. As a result of the shelling, the Luhansk region was once again left without gas.
- The situation in the Donetsk region is also difficult. The Russians were able to occupy Svetlodarsk, although the Office of the President stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had planned to withdraw to take better positions. In the Donetsk OVA, they said that street battles were already underway in Liman.
- Ukrainian defenders and defenders are holding the line. During May 24, 11 Russian attacks were repulsed in the zone of the Joint Forces Operation.
