Ukraine faces new challenges in drone warfare due to Russia's massive use of FPV drones equipped with fiber optic cables.
This was stated on the air of the United News telethon by the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, Kirill Budanov.
According to him, this technology complicates the fight against enemy UAVs, since electronic warfare systems are ineffective against it.

Fiber optic drones are a trend for 2024
– We are winning the drone war. But the Russians have massively started using drones with cables. This is what is called fiber optics. This is a huge problem for us, because it is impossible to stop them with electronic warfare, – Budanov explained.
The Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate noted that the use of fiber optic drones is a trend for 2024.
This is such a know-how and trend of this year, – the Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate added.
Therefore, the key task of next year will be to find effective methods to counter this technology.
Production of drones in Ukraine
At the same time, Ukraine has significantly increased its own production of drones. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov noted that thanks to large-scale orders from the Ministry of Defense, domestic manufacturers were able to meet the key needs of the Armed Forces, minimizing dependence on foreign suppliers.
– 96.2% – this is the share of Ukrainian drones among all UAVs for the Defense Forces this year, Umerov emphasized.
In 2024, Ukrainian enterprises produced and assembled more than 1.5 million FPV drones, as well as other types of drones, in particular:
- strike copter bombers;
- kamikaze planes;
- reconnaissance wing drones;
- long-range deepstrike drones.
