The Financial Times reports that Russia is afraid to buy ballistic missiles from Iran because it understands that in return Ukraine could receive long-range ATACMS missiles from our allies.
Russia, like the West, does not want to create additional reasons that could lead to parity or equalization of military capabilities and capabilities in war. political scientist Andrei Vigirinsky told Channel 24 about this.
According to him, when mass rocket attacks on the civilian and energy infrastructure of Ukraine began, Western partners began to provide us with air defense systems.
Now in the Armed Forces of Ukraine there is a need for long-range missiles. But Western countries believe that the supply of such weapons to Ukraine can lead to a significant escalation of the conflict, the political scientist noted.
However, he believes that we will be able to provide such missiles if Iran starts supplying Russia with ballistic missiles, and it will strike them at the territory of Ukraine.
Russia may have been prevented
In his opinion, Russia is aware of this, and, perhaps, was warned, because it has channels of communication at the level of special services with Western countries.
Just like she was warned about the possibility of a threat to nuclear facilities, he suggested.
According to him, the West could explain to Moscow that they are providing Ukraine with funds that it can use within its territory. Those means that reach the territory of Russia are the own developments of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex, and they cannot control them.
Why Russia is afraid to use Iranian ballistic missiles: watch the video
Western countries could negotiate with the Kremlin until they provide Ukraine with missile systems that can hit the rear support units on Russian territory. But if Moscow begins to use weapons received from Iran or from China, the West will be forced to do so.
“This argument is rational, it was most likely discussed with Russia and it took this factor into account,” Andrey Vigirinsky noted.
Russia abandons Iranian ballistic missiles
- The Financial Times writes that the Kremlin is refraining from purchasing Iranian long-range ballistic missiles that fly faster than the speed of sound and have a large combat load.
- Russia is inclined to such a decision that, according to NATO countries, the most deterrent factor was the US threat to provide Kyiv with the long-awaited ATACMS missile system, the range of which is 300 kilometers. That is, missiles of this range will be able to hit the territory of Russia.
- Ivan Uss, chief consultant of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, believes that Tehran itself may need ballistic missiles that Russia is afraid to supply from Iran. Uss said: according to Saudi Arabia, Iran is preparing aggression against them. Iran is also helping the Houthis who are fighting against Saudi Arabia.
