The European Council fully supports the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which recently conducted an inspection at the Zaporozhye NPP. Now the EU member states believe that the presence of the IAEA at the captured station is necessary.
This was stated by the President of the European Council Charles Michel after a conversation with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. He published the corresponding conclusions on Twitter.
Ensuring nuclear safety is a key task
Charles Michel expressed support for the IAEA, which carried out the inspection of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
“Their courage and professionalism in carrying out the first mission to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant are amazing,” the head emphasized European Council.
According to him, Rafael Grossi spoke about the current situation on the territory of the facility. The leaders of both organizations came to the conclusion that today the presence of Russia at the captured station is a danger to the whole world.
Russia has put the world in danger. Ensuring nuclear safety is key: the permanent presence of the IAEA at the station is necessary,” Charles Michel tweeted.
Remember , during a press conference on September 2, the head of mission, Rafael Grossi, promised that the status report ZNPP will be made public at the beginning of next week.
IAEA visit to ZNPP: brief
- In March 2022, Russian troops occupied the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which was under constant shelling. During one of these, a power outage occurred – all 6 power units were disconnected from the network. Fortunately, the next day Ukrainian personnel resumed work at the ZNPP. Due to the provocation from Russia, the Ukrainian authorities demanded a reaction from the international community.
- The IAEA responded to the appeals of the Ukrainian authorities. The mission headed by Rafael Grossi left for Ukraine on September 1.
- Grossi himself and most of the IAEA representatives left the nuclear power plant on the evening of September 1. 5 representatives of the mission remained at the ZNPP.
- After the inspection, Grossi made an ambiguous statement that the integrity of the occupied Zaporozhye NPP had been violated several times. However, he did not name the Russian infidels as the culprits. Moreover, he stated that he saw professional cooperation between the occupiers and Ukrainians.
- Volodymyr Zelensky warned that infidels are trying to turn the IAEA mission into a tour of the station that will not yield results.
