Russia began to withdraw troops from Kherson: ISW analyzed the plans of the occupiers

< p _ngcontent-sc90="" class="news-annotation">Russian troops began to retreat from the western part of the Kherson region. But, obviously, they can repeat the same mistake as in the Kharkiv region and, at the same time, commit one of the largest terrorist attacks of this war.

To withdraw troops from western Kherson, it is necessary that the remaining Russian detachment held the line against a Ukrainian attack, covering other Russian forces as they retreated. Such a troop must be well trained, professional, and willing to die for their brethren in order to carry out this duty effectively. But Russia is unlikely to take such a step.

How the Russians retreat

Experts from the Institute for the Study of War said that everything indicates that the retreat of Russian troops from the Kherson region has begun. So far, the invaders are actively dumping ammunition, military equipment and some unidentified units from the western bank of the Dnieper to the eastern one using ferries. Russian forces sent 2,000 mobilized men to hold the front and continue to shell Ukrainian positions, probably trying to cover the withdrawal of their forces.

In addition, the Russian occupation administration is preparing the evacuation of specialists brought from Russia, Ukrainian collaborators and the banking system of Kherson. It is known that the Gauleiter “administration” in Berislav and the “humanitarian facilities” in Kherson ceased their activities.

As noted above, for an effective withdrawal of troops, it is necessary that the retreat be left to cover one of the most professional units, which will defend itself as efficiently as possible and at the same time at the cost of its own life. However, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Russian military leadership, on the contrary, could withdraw the most combat-ready units and leave mobilized soldiers to cover the departure.

Russian propagandists immediately began to deny this, however, if Ukraine's assessment is correct, then in the Kremlin create conditions for the retreat of Russian forces to turn into a flight again.

It is unlikely that the poorly trained, newly mobilized Russian reservists will stand and resist a Ukrainian counterattack if Ukrainian forces decide to attack them and pursue the retreating forces. – experts noted.

Therefore, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine break through the defense of the “mobiks”, Russian forces may suffer the same collapse in the Kherson region as in the Kharkiv region.

Why is it profitable for the invaders to blow up the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station

  • Russian officials continue to prepare the media space for their collapse in the Kherson region by not revealing Putin's retreat plans. Russian propagandists and military experts are already writing that difficult decisions await the country and November will be very difficult.
  • To cover their withdrawal, Russian troops will most likely try to blow up the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and blame it on the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This would give Kremlin propaganda a good reason why their troops had to withdraw.
  • But there is an even bigger reason – the scale of the flooding from the dam explosion will prevent Ukrainian troops from pursuing the Russians deep into the Kherson region.
  • Undermining the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station could flood 80 Ukrainian cities, cause significant damage to Ukraine's energy supply and lead to internal displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. There is another benefit here for the Russian invaders.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on October 21 that a dam breach could cut off water supplies to much of southern Ukraine and pose a serious threat to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, which uses water from the Kakhovka Reservoir to cool down your objects.
