A meeting took place between the leaders of the two superpowers – US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Russia has already stated that they are watching everything “closely.”

It is quite possible that Vladimir Putin could be sad because of the very fact of communication between Xi and Biden. Alina Gritsenko, a consultant at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, shared these thoughts with Channel 24 .

China and Russia not only have different dreams, but also different beds

Gritsenko noted that Russia's only hope for China is to remain ideological adversaries against the United States. However, the Celestial Empire views the confrontation completely differently – if Moscow is set on a serious conflict with Washington, then Beijing is trying to find a certain compromise and common interests for cooperation.

  • climate issues;
  • limiting drug trafficking control;
  • international terrorism.

China hopes to find a peaceful existence, unlike Russia. That is, the Celestial Empire does not seek a “head-on” collision with the United States, but seeks, as it were, to “divide the world.” It can also be assumed that the Russians realized that a rapprochement between China and the United States was inevitable. In the end, it will not be able to influence relations between Xi and Biden, since it has lost its geopolitical status in all regions.

But even the beds were different, they stood separately in the rooms, so to speak. China has a completely different strategy and worldview than Russia, and uses it to pursue its national interests. The hostile dreams that Russia has towards the United States will never be realized, and if they have placed certain hopes on China, then it is unlikely to be able to help,” Alina Gritsenko emphasized.

However, to a certain extent, Russia and China are ideological allies. Both countries oppose the clear hegemony of the United States in the world. At the same time, Beijing is striving for polycentrism: its hostile policy towards the United States is intended to prove that different political systems or systems can simultaneously exist in the world and not be criticized by other states. Russia, with its policy towards the United States, wants to divide the world into two blocs and return everyone to the 20th century, but the terrorist country will no longer be able to do this.

Key statements on the meeting between Xi and Biden

  • Joe Biden has not spoken about China's partnership with Russia, but the growth of the nuclear arsenal has been discussed, but the Xi government refuses to enter into nuclear arms control negotiations without achieving parity with the arsenals of the US and Russia.
  • Most likely, Washington will increase supplies based on the lessons of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the negotiations between Biden and Xi did not change Beijing’s attitude towards the “Ukrainian crisis.”
  • Leaders mostly repeated old talking points about Taiwan. Xi is concerned that the upcoming elections could intensify independence issues on the island, which is Beijing's red line. Biden wants to establish military contacts to prevent conflict. How Xi reacted is still unclear.
  • The parties also decided to discuss “ways to reduce the risks of advanced AI systems” in the future. China has pledged to help stop the export of chemicals used in fentanyl production and pill presses. President Biden said he personally knows people who have lost children to the drug.
