Ukraine hopes to get EU candidate status in the summer of 2022. Dmitry Kuleba stressed that refusal would mean that they want to deceive us.

Ukraine is now the only place in Europe where people die because of the values on which the EU is based, stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs . This must be respected.

If we don't get candidate status, it means only one thing that Europe is trying to deceive us, Kuleba said.

He added that Ukraine is not going to put up with this.

Note that on May 1, Kuleba discussed with the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell granting Ukraine an EU candidate, an embargo on Russian oil and evacuation from Mariupol.

Ukraine's accession to the EU: at what stage is the process

Recall that after a full-scale attack by Russia, Ukraine asked for an early entry into the European Union – according to a shortened procedure. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the application on February 28.

  • On the eve of May 9, Zelensky spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The President showed the second part of the questionnaire from the EU. This is a questionnaire that will allow you to get the status of a candidate for the European Union. Ukraine completed its first part back in mid-April and handed it over to Brussels.
  • When the questionnaire is completed in full, the European Commission will prepare a recommendation for Ukraine on compliance with the EU accession criteria. After that, full-fledged negotiations on this matter will be possible.
  • By the way, the Office of the President also noted that Ukraine wants to receive the status of an EU candidate in the summer of 2022.

French President Emmanuel Macron noted that the process of joining the European Union, according to current standards, usually lasts for years. Therefore, he called on the European community for large-scale reforms and updating the rules.

In Germany, they urged not to make “empty promises” to Ukraine. Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock said that it is really unknown when Ukraine will join the EU. She cited the war as the reason.
