Reality May Be Different: How Russia's Bet on Trump May Backfire Petro Sineokiy

Реальность может оказаться другой: как ставка России на Трампа может сыграть против нее

Russia hopes that with Donald Trump coming to power in the United States, Russia will find it easier to fight the war against Ukraine. But he is unlikely to make “gifts” for the aggressor country.

Political scientist Vladimir Fesenko told Channel 24 about this, noting that Trump will act only in the interests of the United States. At least in the way he sees them. And here the situation can develop very interestingly.

What to expect from Trump

As Fesenko noted, at one time in Russia they also pinned high hopes on Trump, who became president in 2016. Back then, local character Zhirinovsky was uncorking champagne. But in practice, everything turned out to be completely different.

Relations between the US and Russia only worsened under Trump. He wanted to come to an agreement with Putin, but the dictator did not make concessions. That is why Trump made a number of gestures against Russia in order to put pressure on it.

The Javelins for Ukraine were not out of love for us. It was a gesture to Putin. Don't want to negotiate? I will help Ukraine. There were sanctions against the Northern Streams. There was an economic background. Not everything is so simple with Trump. In Russia they definitely hope that it will be easier for them under Trump. That Trump will negotiate with them. I think that reality may be different than they think, – Fesenko noted.
